Truth and Justice For Richard Chang

Richard Chang was a happy family man with a wife and two teenage children when he died tragically on 13th July 2004 . He lived in Hackney and was a Senior IT Business Analyst. The incident took place inside the Abbey National bank headquarters about 1.45pm , shortly after being deceived by Abbey management into attending a meeting with Kroll (corporate detectives) due to a whistle blowing document that was sent to Abbey Management.

Kroll were brought into investigate the anonymous documents that had been distributed to Senior Directors at Abbey National bank. The documents allege financial misappropriation, fraud and sexual impropriety. The document related to the appointment of the Buttonwood Tree Consultants by Abbey Management. The document implicated a selection of senior staff and consultants. Richard was secretly taped with no right to legal representation. The Coroner refused to allow the tape to be played at the Inquest as this would have demonstrated that Richard was subjected to consistent hectoring and misleading questions.

Richard was subjected to a two and a hour gruelling interrogation without a break. During the interrogation he was subjected to harrasment and bullying by the two Kroll interrogators.

Shortly after a 3-hour interrogating interview, Richard is said to have jumped to his death from the 5th floor of Abbey's headquarters.

Chang Family denied access to Abbey building to say prayers and lay flowers
Abbey have written to me today to say
"We...gave a clear indication that we did not consider our building an appropriate venue for a rememberance service.  Whilst we have no doubts that you would conduct yourselves with your usual dignity, we are not able to accomodate any visit this year (or in future years).  We trust you will understand that we have a duty to our staff that entails this response."
Last year we entered the building for about 40 minutes and said a few prayers and laid one bouquet of flowers at 7pm after most of the staff had left work.  We are not asking for alot.

The truth will prevail.
We are getting closer to the truth.  Richard's parents, sisters, and friends do not  believe he committed suicide. We believe that the senior directors involved do not have any evidence to prove Richard had any involvement in writing the anonymous documents.  It now cannot be ruled out that a third party may have been involved in signing the alleged suicide note.  The police decided very early on in their investigation that the death was a suicide.  The pathologist conducted the post mortem based on the fact that the death was not suspicious.  He did not carry out a forensic post mortem. The Coroner did not consent to the police report being passed to the health and safety team.  As a result they did not know the death was related to work and therefore did not do any investigation.

The Fourth Anniversary of Richard's death at Abbey National headquarters
We will be organising a vigil for the fourth anniversary of Richard's death including campaigning afterwards.  Each year the event has grown so it would be great this year if we had a good turn out.  So please make the time to attend and let your friends know.  It does make a difference.  For more information contact Valerie 07941214833 or Jackie 0121 588 7678
